I need to know the difference between maintenance free car batteries and normal car batteries?

This is for a formal essay and so I need to know the different structure how lead and calcium work in a maintenance free battery and how they do not need to be topped up with distilled water and so on. Any help would really really be appreciated. I tried looking it up online but of no avail I did not find proper info.
