Was my friend right about this?

ok i wrote my best guy friend that i think we should stop talking b/c i love him more than he will ever know, and i am tierd of getting hurt i did this last night, and this afternoon i texed him and asked him if we should stop talking and he said we dont have to talk every day maybe every other day and stuff. Well my older friend said that was his way of telling me he doesnt want to lose me. He has a g f but i know he is not happy. But why wont he tell me he has feelings for me also hes very shy!!!
