The Da Vinci Code - Dan Brown?

Ive never really been a fan because i havent read it before, but I want to get into reading it and because there was some confusion that they released the film da vinci code when it should have been angels and demons first because of the books, I wondered whether it was a series? or whether it was just that dan brown released that book first and it has nothing to do with the da vinci code plot/?
