Any free sites to get vital statistic records?

My grandmother was born around 1894 and my grandfather was born about 40 to 50 years before. I know he died when my father was 6 so somewhere around 1936. My father and aunt can't give me the information due to not remembering (alzheimers) and I am wanting to do a family tree. I am 38 my father is the youngest and he will be 80 this month. So it is quite a job due to the fact of age difference. Anyone know of any free sites to look at?
